Concrete Bowls
Yes! Concrete! It’s a fun medium that makes for a different kind of art project. Want a funky, functional piece of art to add to your collection? Then you need to try making concrete bowls!
Start by purchasing a set of inexpensive plastic bowls that nest within each other. These will be the molds for the concrete. You will also need 1 bag of quick setting concrete, cooking oil, a 5 gallon bucket & a shovel to stir the concrete.
The bowls - inexpensive nesting sized plastic bowls.
Fast setting concrete - beware this stuff is heavy lifting!!
Cooking oil.
STEP 1: Grease the plastic bowls with the cooking oil. Grease the inside of your larger bowls, grease the outside of the smaller bowls.
STEP 2: Mix the concrete in a large bucket. I used a shovel for mixing. Remember to work quickly - this is fast setting concrete!
STEP3 3: Once the concrete is poured into the larger bowls, set the smaller sized bowl on top of the concrete and press down gently. To keep the top bowl pressed down into the concrete, I used a couple of large rocks to keep the pressure on the concrete until it dried.
STEP 4: Once the bowls have set overnight, remove the plastic bowls from the concrete bowls. Just a little wiggling of the plastic bowls will do the trick! The cooking oil will allow the plastic bowls to remove easily once the concrete is completely dried. You can now reuse the plastic bowls again for another round of concrete!
Once the plastic bowls were removed, this was the result! Beautiful!! I let them sit in the sun most of the day to get good & dry.
STEP 5: Once the concrete has cured completely - (this may take a couple of days), lightly sand the tops of the bowls to smooth the rough edges.
Gorgeous!!
Here’s the end result!!
Just can’t get enough pictures of these!! They turned out great & I love this look of the concrete with the tree trunk table! Not to mention this is in my parents beautiful back yard - so the setting was a perfect place for the reveal!
My favorite picture of all, this is my sweet Dad’s hands holding the bowl I made for my mom.
My one bag of concrete made 3 large bowls & 3 small bowls. You could vary the look of the bowls by adding some color or pretty rocks or shells into the concrete. Let you imagination go as you create your concrete bowls!! Have fun & enjoy an afternoon of creating something different & who knows…. restore your soul a little along the way!
